Our College Prep Workshop
An 8-hour four session interactive tutoring and college counseling opportunity. The 4 session workshop is organized as follows. Each session is about 2 hours long.
1. Applying to College: Where to Start?
We will discuss how to narrow your college and career options. We will focus on how your personality traits and individual passions should guide your selection process. We will go over how to create a competitive academic profile for yourself, and inform you of important college admission deadlines, interesting college programs near and far, as well as other considerations for low-income students.
2. How to Make Your Application Shine
During this session, we will go over the college application process, tips for making your application stand out, and how to get excellent recommendations. Next, we will work on writing a killer personal statement and workshop the first draft together.
3. Entrance Exam Tips
This session will cover quick tips to do better on your entrance exams. These scores help colleges choose who to admit and who to offer scholarships to, so it’s important to understand how the tests are formulated. We will go over question types, timing and elimination strategies, and then practice these techniques together.
4. Paying for College
We will discuss the best way to pay for college, including dual-enrollment, state colleges, Bright Futures, federal grants and other funding options. We will search for scholarships, preview the FAFSA, and discuss public vs. private loans as well as loan payoff options.
We often hold our sessions in the evening during the week, usually from 6-8pm. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in scheduling a workshop.
